"Renewal"

Dec 11, 2011

Available for Purchase: $12,000

Artist: Stuart Jacobsen

Materials: Basalt and Glass

Created: 2010

Artist's Statement about the Piece:

Renewal is an environmental statement. It is carved from basalt, a very hard volcanic rock that was quarried here in the Pacific Northwest. The sculpture is an abstract depiction of the earth, floating within the universe. My inclusion of recycled glass into the stone sculpture is meant to serve as a subtle blending of natural and man-made materials. This blending represents my belief in and hope for humankind’s ability to exist in a sustainable symbiotic relationship with nature.

Biographical information about the Artist:

A childhood influenced by growing up near San Francisco Asian arts community and Japanese Gardens, I naturally express myself by interpreting a minimalist contemporary Asian aesthetic. I am inspired by simplicity of form, a love of stone and a curiosity about new ideas and techniques. My sculptures are explorations in form, texture, and contrast. My aesthetic was further refined and developed by my education in landscape design at Oregon State University.
